 I found an empty nest on our palm. I think it is a hummingbird’s nest because it is very small.

* May 5, 2001
I found 2 eggs in the nest while I was sweeping our porch. I think I scared the bird because that’s how I know that there are 2 eggs. We took pictures of the eggs. When we went into the house the bird came back to sit on the eggs, we took pictures of that too.

The bird just sits on the eggs until the eggs hatch. I found out that the nest is made out of branches, leaves, or vines, pine needles insect cocoons, and spider web.

The hummingbird is doing fine it sits on the eggs all day to keep the eggs warm. Yesterday my mom and I went too Target to look for a hummingbird feeder, but they didn’t have one. I also found out that it takes about 15 to22 days for the eggs to hatch. The earliest for the eggs to hatch is May 16, 2001 and the latest would be May 23, 2001 because we don’t know what day the eggs were hatched.

* May 9 and 10, 2001
We found out what eggshells are made out of. They are made out of calcium carbonate. The same brittle white stuff as in chalk, limestone, cave stalactites, sea shells, coral, and pearls are made of.

Very soon the baby birds will hatch. We bought a hummingbird feeder (at this place) for the babies. We hung it up in a tree right in front of our house. The nectar is made out of sugar and water; four-part water and one part sugar. You boil the water, put the sugar then leave it over night to room temperature.

Today the eggs hatched! They are smaller then I expected. They look like round blobs.

The hummingbirds are filling up the nest. Soon they will be flying. Dad took a picture of them. The mom and dad are feeding the babies with insects and nectar. They stand on the nest and put the food or drink into the baby’s mouths.

The hummingbirds flew away. We don’t know what to do with the nest.
