Dear Parent or Guardian:
In accordance with El Segundo District's efforts to provide a thorough and comprehensive education addressing each student's overall health and well-being, this class will address the topics listed below.
The content area will include:
Male/Female Roles and Responsibilities Conception, Pregnancy and Childbirth Contraception
Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV/AIDS Safely Surrendered Baby Law
California Senate Bill 1386 ("Safely Surrendered Baby Law") is required to be addressed along with the topic of human sexuality. The law states that any infant under 3 days old may be surrendered to any hospital room, Los Angeles County fire station, or designated city fire station without arrest or prosecution so long as it is determined the infant was not intentionally harmed.
California Education Code 51201.5 also was amended in 1998 to require that during disease prevention instruction, abstinence, monogamy, and avoidance of multiple sexual partners be emphasized as the most effective means to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
Parent permission is required to participate in this portion of the class. This part of the curriculum is optional. Please indicate if you DO or DO NOT want your child to participate in this portion of the class. Return the signed form via your child no later than Friday, July 1. Your child will be assigned to write an essay about his or her understanding of these topics outside of class during this segment of the class if you opt out.
