Students in grade ten study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the  two world wars. They trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world issues, especially as they pertain to international relations. They extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives.

This class is a full credit course that meets the requirements for a full year of 10th grade social studies, therefore, students should expect to work a minimum of four to five hours per unit to thoroughly and effectively complete class work. Success in the online environment requires the ability to manage time effectively and to work independently. Additionally, the capacity to follow guidelines and protocols achieves new importance in the absence of daily meetings and an onsite teacher.

NOTE: This course is open to Advanced Credit students only (no credit recovery or remedial students). Enrollment in this course requires students to attend an orientation. This meeting is mandatory. Failure to attend will result in dismissal from the course without a refund. Meetings will be held at 2:45 on Wednesday, April 30, Thursday May 29, and on the first day of summer school, Monday, June 16 at 10 a.m.
