Japanese 1 - (日本語 1) - for students interested in Internationalization * and an eventual homestay trip to Japan in the summer of 2016. Do you like eating sushi (すし) or prefer ramen (ラメん)? Shopping for Hello Kitty or watching Anime (アニメ)? Do you think Samurai (武士道) are cool or ever wonder what all those characters mean (ありがとう)? More than just J-Pop and cool tech gadgets...it’s Japanese! Come join us in this unique online (plus field trip) course. We’ll focus on learning the first basic character set in Japanese - Hiragana (ひらがな). Along the way, we’ll also focus on learning some fundamental and important vocabulary and sentence structure that will allow you to become familiar with the language, culture and people. For “graduation” we’ll tour Little Tokyo. The course will be broken up into learning sections: Reading/Writing - this is where we learn Hiragana (ひらがな) Listening/Speaking - this is where we learn to communicate in simple authentic settings Culture - this is where through video and text we examine unique cultural traits/issues Online Video - this is where we “skype” together and practice in groups. Field Trip - we’ll come together at the end of the summer session and visit a Japanese community. You won’t want to miss this - because you’ll finally get to meet everyone in person AND use the language and knowledge you’ve been practicing. Parents welcome too. Field Trip Towards the end of the class (and depending on enrollment), we’ll be taking a field trip to the famous Little Tokyo (in downtown Los Angeles). There we’ll learn more about the people and culture of Japan. We’ll do some hands-on learning and have an opportunity to speak in Japanese. Did I mention we’ll eat some authentic Japanese food too! A transportation and food fee may apply depending on final enrollment and participation.
